Cigarette prices in the Czech Republic in 2026: how much you save compared with Germany, and what changes in 2027

The Czech Republic is a classic destination for German smokers, from Saxony to Bavaria. In November 2026, a pack of 20 Marlboro costs 184 crowns (Kč) there, or €7.56 at the European Central Bank rate of 30 October 2026 (24.353 Kč to €1). In Germany, the same pack costs €9.40.

The gap is real, but it has shrunk a lot: the price of Czech Marlboro has more than doubled since 2010. Here are the official 2026 prices, what you can bring back to Germany, and what the tax increase of 1 January 2027 changes.

One official price, the same across the country

In the Czech Republic, every pack carries a tax stamp printed with its retail price. The price is set by the manufacturer and published by customs in their online register. The excise act forbids the seller to charge more (§ 112) and the customer to buy for less (§ 111a). The price is therefore the same in a Prague supermarket and at a petrol station on the border.

Chesterfield166 Kč€6.82€9.00
Winston166 Kč€6.82€8.50
Dunhill212 Kč€8.71€13.00

A practical consequence: a pack offered below the stamp price, at a market or in the street, has not paid the tax. Buying it is illegal in the Czech Republic, and German customs seize such tobacco on the way back.

What the gap means for a German buyer

On Marlboro, the gap is €1.84 per pack, or €18.40 per carton of 200 cigarettes. It reaches €4.29 on a pack of Dunhill. But the Czech Republic is no longer Germany's cheapest neighbour: Poland sells Marlboro at €6.67, and Austria at €7.00. Hungary, for its part, has moved above (€8.05) with its tax increase of November 2026.

Between EU countries, German customs apply an indicative threshold of 800 cigarettes per person, or 1 kg of rolling tobacco, provided you carry the tobacco yourself and for your own use. Above that, the purchase is presumed commercial: you must prove otherwise, or German tax is due and the tobacco is seized. Bringing some back for a friend or colleague is not covered. On 800 Marlboro, or 4 cartons, the saving is €73.60. The rules are detailed in our customs guide.

1 January 2027: the last step of the increase voted in 2023

The Czech tax on cigarettes has two parts: 30% of the retail price and a fixed amount per cigarette, with a minimum per cigarette. Budget consolidation act no. 349/2023 scheduled an increase of about 5% a year in the fixed part and the minimum, from 2024 to 2027. Rolling tobacco follows the same path: from 3,650 to 3,830 Kč per kilo in 2027.

20252,2804,440
20262,3904,660
20272,5104,890

The 2027 increase adds 2.40 Kč of tax per pack, and 2.90 Kč with VAT at 21%. If manufacturers and sellers keep the same margin in crowns, the 30% share and VAT also apply to the increase itself: by our calculation, Marlboro would go from 184 to about 189 Kč, or €7.74 at the current rate. Each manufacturer will set its price, published by customs.

In Germany, the law voted on 15 October 2026 raises the tax every year until 2030: Marlboro would go from €9.40 to about €10.23 in January 2027 (our article on Germany). The gap with the Czech Republic would therefore grow from about €1.84 to €2.49 per pack. All dates are gathered on our upcoming increases page.

Cheap for a German, expensive for a Czech

In 2010, Marlboro cost 82 Kč in the Czech Republic; it costs 184 in 2026, and 154 in 2023, before the consolidation act. Measured against wages, the pack is even more expensive than in Germany. At the 2026 hourly minimum wage (134.40 Kč gross in the Czech Republic, €13.90 in Germany), it takes 82 minutes of work to pay for a pack of Marlboro in Prague, against 41 minutes in Berlin. Our minutes of work index makes the same comparison for every country we track.

Price remains one of the best-documented levers against smoking (our analysis), and the saving from buying abroad only lasts until the next increase. To quit, our quit smoking section lists the methods that work. In Germany, the free helpline answers on 0800 8 31 31 31; in the Czech Republic, on 800 350 000; in France, Tabac Info Service answers on 39 89.
