Cigarette Prices in the United Kingdom (2026)

In July 2007, the Health Act 2006 came fully into force, imposing a complete ban on smoking in all enclosed workplaces and public spaces across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This landmark public health measure aimed to protect employees and customers from secondhand smoke and marked the start of an ambitious tobacco-control policy.

In 2011, the United Kingdom adopted a policy of systematic annual increases in tobacco taxes, indexed to inflation plus two percentage points (RPI+2%). This "tobacco escalator" mechanism aimed to raise cigarette prices steadily to discourage consumption while securing predictable tax revenues.

In 2015, the United Kingdom banned smoking in cars carrying children, with offenders liable to a fine. The measure was designed to protect minors, who are especially vulnerable, from the high concentration of secondhand smoke in the confined space of a vehicle.

In 2016, the Standardised Packaging Act made plain, standardised packaging mandatory, stripped of logos and attractive colours, simultaneously with France. In 2024, the Tobacco and Vapes Bill was passed, giving legal force to the "Smokefree Generation". This legislation, among the strictest in the world on tobacco control, also regulates the sale and advertising of e-cigarettes, particularly to young people.

In 2026, the first cohort of young people affected by the "Smokefree Generation" law turns 17: those born in 2009, who will never be able to legally buy tobacco. This symbolic milestone marks the concrete implementation of the generational ban.
