Italy has a long tobacco history, with a market once dominated by the state monopoly AAMS (Azienda Autonoma dei Monopoli di Stato). The privatisation of the tobacco branch and sale to British American Tobacco in the 2000s transformed the market. The Sirchia Law of 2005, banning smoking in all enclosed public spaces, was a European pioneer and led to a significant drop in consumption. Italian prices are among the lowest in Western Europe, though the upward trend has accelerated since 2015.
